This past week, Brit Lit began exploring the history and cultural climate of Anglo-Saxon England. As a class, we started our timeline project (which will continue through the semester) placing notable names, events, themes and attitudes, and linguistic developments into context for ourselves. The students took a look at the Runic alphabet, Futhark, which was the writing system used at this time throughout Northern Europe, and wrote their own names.
This coming week, we will investigate the earliest writings in the English language: spiritual testimony and popular folktales and riddles.
